Fitzgerald's favorite song
Long-time Duke Ellington collaborator Billy Strayhorn put together “Something to Live For” in 1939, based on a poem he said he had written when he was only 18.
Ella Fitzgerald would for years after truly make it her own.
Close friends of Fitzgerald would remark that her own self-image issues, as well as all-too-human struggle for stable partnership, came through in her performances of this song. But many of Fitzgerald's fans loved her as dearly as they did close friends.
