Composer, pianist, and singer Howard Hoagland “Hoagy” Carmichael was born on November 22, 1899 in Bloomington, Indiana.
Carmichael studied law and briefly worked with a law firm, but soon realized that his passion was music.
During the ‘20s, ‘30s, and ‘40s, Carmichael wrote the lyrics to countless hits like “Stardust”, “Heart and Soul”, and “Georgia on My Mind.”
Here we have some rare footage of him playing piano - with Lauren Bacall.
Early in his life he met and played with Bix Beiderbecke who influenced his approach to music. Later, on a visit to Chicago, Beiderbecke introduced him to Louis Armstrong.
