Review:
This is the eighty third in a series of special Jazz on the Tube reviews of live stream performances.

Andy Schumm is best-known as a hot cornetist who has sparked the ensembles of many classic jazz groups during the past decade.
Schumm is also a fine clarinetist, altoist, tenor-saxophonist, and drummer.
However as this LiveStream from Aug. 7, 2020 shows, in addition to his other abilities, he is quite skilled as a pianist, playing in a thoughtful and sophisticated style based in the 1920s.
For this solo performance, a tribute to the music and recordings of Bix Beiderbecke, Andy Schumm mostly plays piano including on a rollicking “Big Boy” (recorded by Bix with the Wolverines in 1924) and on two of Beiderbecke’s four piano pieces: “Flashes” and “Candlelights.”
In addition, Schumm plays solo cornet on “I’m Coming Virginia,” improvising in Beiderbecke’s style without directly copying him and quoting several passages from the 1927 record including (near the end) a guitar run by Eddie Lang.
While one looks forward to hearing and seeing Andy Schumm (who is based in Chicago) performing with a hot jazz combo again, he shows on this and his other LiveStreams that he can make rewarding music by himself.
