Originally a cabaret singer, Ann Hampton Callaway has developed during the past 25 years into one of the great jazz vocalists of recent times.
A powerful singer (she can really belt out her notes but also is expert at dynamics and subtlety) and a skilled pianist, Ms. Callaway is also a talented songwriter, an occasional actress, and a stage personality.
On this solo set from Apr. 18, 2020 in which she accompanies herself on piano, Ann Hampton Callaway performs “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore,” a tender version of Stephen Sondheim’s “Not While I’m Around,” “Blue Skies” (which, after a melancholy opening chorus, becomes quite a tour-de-force), a heartbreaking version of “Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye” that is dedicated to the many jazz losses of this period, and a closing improvisation based on suggestions from her audience.
The results are quite memorable.
