The “Paul Butterfield Blues Band” perform at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival featuring Paul Butterfield (harp & vocals), Elvin Bishop (guitar), and Mark Naftalin (keyboards), Keith Johnson (trumpet), David Sanborn (alto sax), Gene Dinwiddie (tenor sax), Jerome Arnold (bass), and Sam Lay (drums).

Native Chicagoan, Paul Butterfield was classically trained on the flute at a young age by a member of the “Chicago Symphony Orchestra.”

He developed an interest in blues harmonica and with further encouragement by Muddy Waters, in 1963 formed the “Paul Butterfield Blues Band.” The group would become known for blending electric blues with rock & roll’s intensity.
