Roosevelt Sykes

Doing the Boogie

Roosevelt Sykes performs in Europe at the American Folk Blues Festival in 1965.

Roosevelt left Chicago in 1954 for New Orleans as electric blues was taking over the Chicago blues clubs. When he returned to recording in the 1960s it was for labels that were documenting the quickly passing blues history including Delmark, Bluesville, Storyville and Folkways. He lived out his final years in New Orleans, where he died from a heart attack on July 17, 1983.

*Gulfport is the second largest city in Mississippi after the state capital Jackson.
