I Got Mine

Frank Stokes

Jan. 1, 1888 – Sept. 12, 1955

“I Got Mine” was recorded by singer and guitarist Frank Stokes in Memphis, Tennessee in 1928.

Raised near Memphis, Frank Stokes a blacksmith by trade learned the guitar when he was a boy. Living twenty-five miles from Beal Street in Hernando, Mississippi he and fellow guitarist Dan Sane formed the “Beal Street Sheiks” and made the trek on the weekends to busk for tips. Stokes developed a style that would have a profound influence on other musicians including Memphis Minnie, white country artist Jimmie Rodgers, and unquestionably W. C. Handy.
