Ice Cream Man

April 10, 1922 – October 1, 2003

Recording in Chicago on May 4, 1953 featuring John Brim (guitar & vocals), Little Walter (harmonica), Eddie Taylor (guitar), and Elga Edmonds (drums).

John Brim taught himself guitar from listing to the recordings of artists like Big Bill Broonzy as a young man in Kentucky. After spending much of the 1940s in Indianapolis before moving to Chicago I 1947. During the 1950s Brim would record for several labels including Chess Records for whom he recorded what would become his most popular song “Ice Cream Man” in 1953. Unfortunately success would have to wait the record was shelved and remained unissued for the next sixteen years. Finally released in 1969, it would also be recorded to great acclaim in the late ’70s by the rock group “Van Halen.” Brim used the royalties that he collected from their cover version to open a Chicago blues club.
