This is the 239th in a series of special Jazz on the Tube reviews of live stream performances.

Support live music – even when it’s streamed!

An adventurous jazz singer and songwriter, Gabrielle Stravelli graduated from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, has toured with Wynton Marsalis’ Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra, worked with Fred Hersch, and led her trio every Saturday night at New York’s West Bank Café.

Among her recordings was a full-length set of Willie Nelson songs, interpreted as jazz.

For her LiveStream of April 25, 2020, Gabrielle Stravelli performs a stardards- oriented set of duets with bassist Pat O’Leary that includes inventive and swinging versions of “It Might As Well Be Spring” (which is taken much faster than usual), “‘Deed I Do,” “I’m Glad There Is You,” “Too Close For Comfort,” “You Turned The Tables On Me,” and a cooking “Goody Goody.”

Review:

This is the twenty eighth in a series of special Jazz on the Tube reviews of live stream performances.

Support live music – even when it’s streamed!

A jazz singer from an early age (both of her parents were singers-pianists), Alexis Cole became a professional while a teenager, singing regularly at a hotel.

She began recording in 1999, became an educator at several colleges, spent two years singing in Japan, and sang with an Army band during 2009-15.

Alexis Cole has released at least nine albums as a leader and grown into a major jazz vocalist.

For this Livestream from May 9, 2020, she sings and plays piano in a swinging performance that is fun and lively, sometimes featuring her singing in unison with her keyboard.

Among the songs performed by Alexis Cole during this enjoyable set are “Bye Bye Blackbird,” “All The Things You Are” (with the rarely heard verse), “My Funny Valentine,” “Get Out Of Town,” her original “Blues For All Us,” and “All Of Me.”

Review:

This is the twentieth ninth in a series of special Jazz on the Tube reviews of live stream performances.

Support live music – even when it’s streamed!

Kristen Strom is an excellent bop-based tenor-saxophonist with a warm tone who is a fixture in the San Francisco Bay area and has been on over 30 albums including two of her own.

Scott Sorkin is a versatile guitarist equally skilled at soloing and accompanying others.

The two make a fine team on this Livestream from April 6, 2020

The music begins five minutes into the Livestream with the verse of “Stardust” leading into a warm and joyful version of Fats Waller’s “Jitterbug Waltz.”

Ms. Strom sings “My Shining Hour,” plays melodically on soprano-sax during “Blackbird,” and concludes with a warm version of “My Ideal” that has a beautiful opening guitar chorus by Sorkin.

The overall results are a tasteful and swinging set of music.

Review:

This is the twenty seventh in a series of special Jazz on the Tube reviews of live stream performances.

Support live music – even when it’s streamed!

Guitarist Gary Lucas has had a busy, varied and very productive career, working with Captain Beefheart, Lou Reed, Nick Cave, Jeff Buckley and many artists from around the world.

Considered a guitar giant whose eclectic and open-minded style cannot be too tightly categorized, Lucas obviously loves to play.

He is currently performing Live Streams three times a week and is never short of enthusiasm or inventive ideas.

Gary Lucas, May 9, 2020 performance is a good example of what he has in store for audiences, joyfully introducing and playing solo instrumentals, making it all look so easy.
