This is the two hundred sixteenth in a series of special Jazz on the Tube reviews of live stream performances.

Jazz cellist Artyom Manukyan was born in Yerevan in Armenia where, due to his parents, he heard a great deal of jazz and classical music while growing up; on cello he emulated jazz bassists.

Manukyan studied classical cello at the State Conservatory, played jazz locally and performed with the Armenia Navy Band before moving to Los Angeles in 2010.

He has since worked as a session musician, a soundtrack composer, and performed with a wide variety of artists including Kamasi Washington, Melody Gardot, Peter Erskine, and Gretchen Parlato.

Pianist Vardan Ovsepian, who is also from Armenia, had extensive training overseas before studying at Berklee, and he has worked as a soloist and with such artists as Mick Goodrick, Peter Erskine, Jerry Bergonzi, and David Binney, leading several of his own CDs.

On their LiveStream of Sept. 3, 2020, Manukyan and Ovsepian perform their thoughtful originals in a set of mostly gentle cello-piano duets, playing in very complementary styles and creating music that is both creative and picturesque.

This is the hundred and twelfth in a series of special Jazz on the Tube reviews of live stream performances.

Support live music – even when it’s streamed!

Born in Armenia, pianist Vardan Ovsepian had extensive study at Yerevan State Conservatory, Estonian Music Academy, Helsinki Jazz Conservatory, and Berklee.

Now based in Los Angeles, Ovsepian has worked with such notables as Mick Goodrick, Peter Erskine, Jerry Bergonzi, and Sara Serpa, and has released a series of CDs as a leader.

Also originally from Armenia and now part of the Los Angeles music scene, cellist Artyom Manukyan has performed in a wide variety of genres (including with Kamasi Washington, Melody Gardot and Gretchen Parlato), on television shows, and at the head of his own quartet.

On Vardan Ovsepiano’s LiveStream of Sept. 3, 2020, he and Artyom Manukyan perform mostly original music that is relaxed (even with the inclusion of one cooker) and features rich melodies and close interplay, fitting creatively into the modern mainstream of jazz.

Review:

This is the two hundred twenty-fourth in a series of special Jazz on the Tube reviews of live stream performances.

Support live music – even when it’s streamed!

Pianist Chris Stiles, who was born in Phoenix and spent a decade living and performing in Asia, has been part of the Washington DC jazz scene since 2018.

With bassist Gerhard Graml and drummer Julian Berkowitz on their LiveStream from Aug. 30, 2020, the Chris Stiles Trio swings its way through straight ahead originals and a few obscurities, showing that there is still plenty of life to be found in bebop when it is played with enthusiasm, sophistication and creativity; each of these musicians deserves to be much better known.
