Review:
This is the twenty third in a series of special Jazz on the Tube reviews of live stream performances.

Bob James has long been famous as a keyboardist and arranger-composer who is often heard in pop/jazz settings including with his group Fourplay.
However James, who early in his career played avant-garde jazz, has occasionally returned to the straight ahead jazz music of his youth and to his background in classical music.
Bob James has recorded a series of rewarding Livestreams that feature him as a solo pianist and occasionally playing over his own prerecorded tracks.
On his Livestream from April 1, 2020 he performs three songs including “I’ll Remember April,” and Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile.”

Review:
This is the one hundred and sixty-seventh in a series of special Jazz on the Tube reviews of live stream performances.

Kevin Hays started playing piano when he was six, becoming interested in jazz as a teenager, having lessons with Lou Stein.
Hays worked with Nick Brignola, briefly attended the Manhattan School of Music and was recording as a leader by 1990; he has since led more than 20 other albums.
Hays gained experience working with Bob Belden, the Harper Brothers, Steve Wilson, Benny Golson, Joshua Redman, Seamus Blake, Eddie Henderson, and Sonny Rollins (1995), leading a trio with bassist Doug Weiss and drummer Bill Stewart for 15 years, and the New Day trio with bassist Rob Jost and drummer Greg Joseph.
Kevin Hays mixes together his piano playing with an occasional tasteful use of electronics during his May 29, 2020 LiveStream, improvising on adventurous renditions of Wayne Shorter’s “El Gaucho,” the Beatles’ “And I Love Her,” “Summertime,” a boppish Charlie Parker blues, “Alone Together” and a few other pieces, creating melodic yet unpredictable music that is often a bit cinematic, showing why he is rated so high in the modern jazz world.

Review:
This is the thirtieth in a series of special Jazz on the Tube reviews of live stream performances.

When Joey DeFrancesco burst upon the scene in the 1980s, the Hammond B3 organ was on the verge of near-extinction in jazz, having been completely overshadowed by the rise of the electric piano and synthesizer.
However DeFrancesco, who was originally strongly influenced by Jimmy Smith, was a bright, new and very energetic voice on the organ, one whose enthusiasm and obvious virtuosity helped lead his instrument to make a major comeback; he has been a popular attraction ever since.
Although he normally leads a trio or quartet, Joey DeFrancesco is such a dominant force on his instrument that he really does not need any other musicians in order to put on an impressive performance.
From Mar. 29, 2020, this Livestream gives one a rare opportunity to watch Joey DeFrancesco close up as he plays creative versions of blues, ballads and lesser-known standards (plus “Sunny”) with his usual brilliance.
