Ben Williams is considered one of the top young acoustic bassists in jazz of the past decade.

He began playing bass when he was ten, earning a Master of Music in Jazz Studies at Juilliard and winning the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Bass Competition in 2009.

Williams has since worked with Pat Metheny’s Unity Band, recorded with Stefon Harris and Steve Wilson and led three CDs of his own.

On this solo concert from May 19, 2020, Williams begins with a rhythmic piece that holds together quite well, building his improvisation off of the opening phrase.

For the second number he uses a quiet electronic pattern, sings a bit with his bass, and then takes an outstanding solo while the third and final original is a ballad in which he sings and interacts with his bass.

It is an impressive outing for the young bassist.

Review:

This is the thirty second in a series of special Jazz on the Tube reviews of live stream performances.

Support live music – even when it’s streamed!

A fine jazz singer-songwriter, Halie Loren was born in Sitka, Alaska, lives in Oregon, and since 2008 has recorded at least 11 albums.

She has a warm voice, writes expressive lyrics, and sounds very much at home accompanying herself on piano.

Halie Loren has recorded a long series of Livestreams.

On the Livestream from April 15, 2020 she performs her original “Pieces Of Me,” a song by the recently deceased songwriter John Prine, takes a ballad a capella, and also performs several of her other originals, telling the story behind the songs.

It is a mellow set of music performed with the informality of a living room concert, which it actually is; her charm and beautiful voice make this a fine performance.

Jimmy Bruno has been one of the top straight-ahead jazz guitarists of the past 30 years.

While he toured with Buddy Rich as a teenager and has been part of several all-star bands, most frequently Bruno has been featured at the head of his trio.

This Livestream show from Mar. 18, 2020 was the first in a series of weekly performances.

Bruno and his group perform a variety of standards including some Jobim’s “How Insensitive,” “There Is No Greater Love,” “Days Of Wine and Roses,” “Moonlight In Vermont,” and the Charlie Parker swinging blues “Relaxin’ At Camarillo.”

Review:

This is the twenty third in a series of special Jazz on the Tube reviews of live stream performances.

Support live music – even when it’s streamed!

Bob James has long been famous as a keyboardist and arranger-composer who is often heard in pop/jazz settings including with his group Fourplay.

However James, who early in his career played avant-garde jazz, has occasionally returned to the straight ahead jazz music of his youth and to his background in classical music.

Bob James has recorded a series of rewarding Livestreams that feature him as a solo pianist and occasionally playing over his own prerecorded tracks.

On his Livestream from April 1, 2020 he performs three songs including “I’ll Remember April,” and Charlie Chaplin’s “Smile.”

This is the one hundred and sixty-seventh in a series of special Jazz on the Tube reviews of live stream performances.

Kevin Hays started playing piano when he was six, becoming interested in jazz as a teenager, having lessons with Lou Stein.

Hays worked with Nick Brignola, briefly attended the Manhattan School of Music and was recording as a leader by 1990; he has since led more than 20 other albums.

Hays gained experience working with Bob Belden, the Harper Brothers, Steve Wilson, Benny Golson, Joshua Redman, Seamus Blake, Eddie Henderson, and Sonny Rollins (1995), leading a trio with bassist Doug Weiss and drummer Bill Stewart for 15 years, and the New Day trio with bassist Rob Jost and drummer Greg Joseph.

Kevin Hays mixes together his piano playing with an occasional tasteful use of electronics during his May 29, 2020 LiveStream, improvising on adventurous renditions of Wayne Shorter’s “El Gaucho,” the Beatles’ “And I Love Her,” “Summertime,” a boppish Charlie Parker blues, “Alone Together” and a few other pieces, creating melodic yet unpredictable music that is often a bit cinematic, showing why he is rated so high in the modern jazz world.
