This is the ninth in a series of special Jazz on the Tube reviews of live stream performances.

Support live music – even when it’s streamed!

A major jazz keyboardist from Cuba, Roberto Fonseca was a professional musician by the time he was 15 when he debuted at the Havana International Jazz Festival.

He moved to the U.S. around 2001 after having worked with the Buena Vista Social Club and has since collaborated with such notables as Regina Carter, Anat Cohen, Michael Brecker and Wayne Shorter.

Fonseca, who sometimes punctuates his keyboard playing by singing along in unison, led ten CDs during 1999-2019 and shows equal skills on piano and electric keyboards, invigorating modern Afro-Cuban jazz music.

He was scheduled to perform at Joe’s Pub in New York; with the current lockdown, he still had an opportunity to play at the venue for this streamed performance.

Joined by bassist Yandy Martinez and drummer Ruly Hernández, Roberto Fonseca performs a full set of his originals, exploring a variety of moods (with Martinez taking a few outstanding solos including a bowed improvisation) that hold one’s interest throughout the spirited performance.

Lilan Kane, who considers herself a soul and jazz singer, is based in Oakland.

She graduated from Berklee and has since returned to the San Francisco Bay area where she has worked at local clubs and become a member of the Pete Escovedo Latin Jazz Orchestra.

On her LiveStream from April 17, 2020, Lilan Kane accompanies her vocals on a keyboard, performing soulful renditions of her originals and r&b covers with enthusiasm and a very likable style.

This is the one hundred fifty-seventh in a series of special Jazz on the Tube reviews of live stream performances.

Jacques Lesure has been a longtime fixture in the Los Angeles area, playing straight ahead jazz guitar in a soulful and fresh style that appeals to those listeners who enjoy Wes Montgomery and early George Benson.

Originally from Detroit, he has worked with such notables as Jimmy Smith, Pharoah Sanders, Carmen Lundy, Paula West and James Brown.

On his LiveStream from Nov. 13, 2020, Lesure leads his group MUFO (which means “groove” in Swahili), a quartet that also includes keyboardist Pete Kuzma (who often emulates an organ), drummer Marvin “Smitty” Smith, and Christian Moraga on congas.

Starting with a minor-toned straight ahead blues and continuing with other songs that have the bluesy and soulful flavor of the mid-1960s, Jacques Lesure and MUFO perform high-quality soul jazz that indeed grooves.

Review:

This is the 241st in a series of special Jazz on the Tube reviews of live stream performances.

Support live music – even when it’s streamed!

Pianist Emmet Cohen has hosted a long series of weekly LiveStream concerts at “Emmet’s Place.”

Born May 25, 1990, Cohen began piano lessons when he was three, won several piano competitions, and has been quite busy in the jazz world during the past decade.

He has led four volumes in his Masters Legacy Series which featured him teaming up with veterans Jimmy Cobb, Ron Carter, Benny Golson, Tootie Heath and George Coleman.

On this edition of Live From Emmett’s Place from May 3, 2021, the 54th of his LiveStreams, the 30-year old pianist performs with his trio plus guest guitarist Dan Wilson (who starts the program with an exciting and extended solo on an uptempo “If I Should Lose You”) and singer Cyrille Aimée.

Among the other numbers performed are swinging versions of “Byrdlike,” “Moonglow,” “Come Fly With Me,” “You Won’t Be Satisfied,” “I Can’t Help It,” “The Lamp Is Low,” “Oye Como Va,” and “Straight No Chaser.” The good-humored playing (along with the high musicianship) displays the joy of jazz.
