A major alto-saxophonist ever since joining Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in the early 1980s, the New Orleans-born Donald Harrison worked with Jack McDuff and Roy Haynes prior to Blakey, and afterwards he co-led a quintet with trumpeter Terence Blanchard for several years.

Since that time, Harrison has most frequently been heard as a leader (heading around 20 albums so far) although he also worked with Eddie Palmieri and in all-star groups including most notably The Cookers.

On his LiveStream of July 7, 2020, Donald Harris plays over a prerecorded rhythm section, performing three pieces including a boppish blues reminiscent of Charlie Parker and “Watermelon Man,” displaying a beautiful tone, superior technique, and creative ideas while swinging throughout.

An up-and-coming jazz singer, Alexis Morrast was originally from Newark, New Jersey, began singing when she was three, and has since performed with Christian McBride, Barry Harris, Steve Jordan, and Michael Feinstein among others.

She has a mature voice and style but was actually only in her early twenties at the time of this May 23, 2020 LiveStream.

Joined by an excellent local rhythm section, Alexis Morrast puts warmth and soul into such songs as “Caravan,” “Besame Mucho,” “Basin Street Blues,” and “Kissing Me Softly With His Song,” displaying an impressive range and an appealing voice.

Sometimes sounding a bit like Sarah Vaughan, Alexis Morrast shows a lot of potential during this fine performance.

Born and raised in Durham, North Carolina, pianist Chris Pattishall, who studied with Marcus Roberts, was a professional jazz pianist as a teenager.

While he has worked with Jimmy Heath, Jon Hendricks, and Wycliffe Gordon. Pattishall has long been attracted to prebop jazz piano, finding his own voice within the genre while feeling free to stretch its boundaries.

His solo piano LiveStream of May 21, 2020 features Pattishall playing songs written by or associated with Fats Waller including “Alligator Crawl,” Jitterbug Waltz,” “Truckin’,” and “Ain’t Misbehavin’”; some of the versions are fantasies based on the original tunes.

The multi-part interpretation of “Truckin’” really displays Chris Pattishall’s creativity without losing the essence of either the song or Fats Waller’s stride style.
