Review:

This is the hundred and fourth in a series of special Jazz on the Tube reviews of live stream performances.

Altoist Roman Filiu was born and raised in Cuba.

An avant-garde player with a complex improvising style, impressive technique, and his own sound, Filiu is based in New York and has worked with Irakere, the David Murray Big Band, Andrew Cyrille, Gonzalo Rublacaba, Steve Coleman, Miguel Zenón, Mchele Rosewoman, Roy Hargrove and many others.

Filiu performs regularly with Henry Threadgill´s Ensemble Double Up, and leads his own quartet and the group Quarteria.

On his LiveStream from June 3, 2020, Roman Filiu performs his “Danza #2, the unaccompanied ”Langsam,” and the rhythmic and relatively accessible “Cha Cha Cha Danza #7.”

Filiu is accompanied by pianist Luis Guerra (who is unseen) on two of the three improvisations; the altoist’s playing throughout is thoughtful and purposeful while always being adventurous.
