The Dukes Of Dixieland was one of the most popular jazz groups of the 1950s and early ‘60s.
Led by trumpeter Frank Assunto, the band included his brother trombonist Fred Assunto and his father Jac Assunto (doubling on trombone and banjo).
Their spirited versions of Dixieland and swing standards helped build the audience for the music.
The Dukes were so popular that they appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show three times in 1958.
For their version of “76 Trombones,” the group also includes clarinetist Eugene Bolen, pianist Stanley Mendelson, Lowell Miller on tuba, and drummer Red Hawley.
