Live At The Montreux Jazz Festival – 1999

Tony Martinez & The Cuban Power

A rare film clip of Cuban tenor-saxophonist Tony Martinez and his impressive band

During 1998-99, saxophonist Tony Martinez led the Cuban Power, recording three albums that set the standard for high-powered Afro-Cuban jazz.

Not much has been heard since then from Martinez (who moved to Switzerland) but, over 20 years later, his music still sounds fresh and stirring.

This is a rare glimpse of the band (which includes pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, two trumpets, two tenors including Martinez, guitar, bass, drums, and two percussionists) at the 1999 Montreux Jazz Festival.

Martinez, Rubalcaba and the powerful percussionists really drive the ensembles.
