During the past decade, Anat Cohen has been one of the most consistently inventive and eclectic clarinetists, able to perform creatively in a variety of different idioms.

On this performance from the Jazz Standard, Cohen is featured at the head of her tentet which also includes musical director Oded Lev-Ari, cellist Rubin Kodheli, trumpeter Nadje Noordhuis, trombonist Nick Finzer, baritonist Owen Broder, vibraphonist James Shipp, pianist Vitor Goncalves, guitarist Sheryl Bailey, bassist Tal Mashiach, and drummer Anthony Pinciotti.

After starting out in a light-hearted fashion, “Putty Boy Strut” becomes rather atmospheric as Cohen interacts with otherworldly sounds and electronics with guitarist Bailey having a prominent role.

In her confident and very original playing, Anat Cohen shows that perhaps there is potentially a role for the clarinet in fusion.
