Pianist Keith Jarrett led one of his most memorable bands in the 1970s, a quartet that also included tenor-saxophonist Dewey Redman, bassist Charlie Haden, and drummer Paul Motian.
The trio without Redman performed at the NDR Workshop in Hamburg, Germany on June 14, 1972; the full set was released by ECM as Hamburg ’72.
This film clip has the first half of the performance with Jarrett being clearly inspired in his fairly free playing by Haden and Motian, particularly during a segment where the pianist switches to soprano sax.
The medley of originals gives each of the trio’s members opportunities to solo with Jarrett being the first among equals during a stimulating set of post bop jazz.
