Bassist Dave Holland was an important part of the British jazz scene when Miles Davis heard him play at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, resulting in him coming to America and having quite a career.

Holland was with Miles Davis (1968-70), played with Chick Corea in the avant-garde quartet Circle, worked with Anthony Braxton (1972-76), Sam Rivers and Stan Getz, recorded with John Abercrombie and Jack DeJohnette in the Gateway Trio, and began a long association with the ECM label.

Mostly a leader ever since 1983 (he has headed at least 24 albums of his own), Holland put together one of his strongest groups in the late 1990s: a quintet with trombonist Robin Eubanks, tenor-saxophonist Chris Potter, vibraphonist Steve Nelson, and drummer Billy Kilson.

The same band but with Nate Smith on drums is featured in 2005 on “How’s Never,” an original that builds as it progresses with fine solos by Holland, Eubanks, and Smith.
