Arnett Cobb (1918-89) was one of the great Texas tenors and was known as the “Wild Man of the Tenor Sax” due to his rambunctious and stomping style.
Cobb succeeded Illinois Jacquet in the Lionel Hampton Orchestra, being one of Hampton’s main solo stars during 1942-47.
He overcame serious illness and a car accident to have a viable solo career in which his large tone and bluesy style always made him popular.
From 1980, Cobb “talks” to the audience through his horn (and with hand gestures) during the melody chorus of “Just Like That.”
He builds up his solo gradually during the restrained blues, making every note mean something while accompanied by pianist Sir Roland Hanna, bassist Jimmy Woode, and drummer Eddie Locke.
