Catherine Russell has successfully made the transition from being a backup singer to top pop artists (including Madonna) to developing into one of today’s top jazz vocalists.
The daughter of the 1930s bandleader-arranger-pianist Luis Russell, Ms. Russell often performs songs from that era in addition to more modern material.
On Mar. 31, 2012, she sang the 1920s standard “Everybody Loves My Baby” at Lincoln Center with her regular rhythm section (guitarist Matt Munisteri, pianist Mark Shane, bass Lee Hudson and drummer Mark McLean) plus six horn players; trumpeter Jon Erik-Kellso, clarinetist Dan Block, and pianist Shane take short solos during the rousing performance.
