To celebrate arranger Gil Evans’ centennial, Ryan Truesdell put together a big band in 2012 and not only revived some of Evans’ most rewarding charts but also uncovered some previously unknown material.
Evans was one of the key arrangers for the Claude Thornhill Orchestra, incorporating elements of bebop into his writing for the swing band.
“Sorta Kinda” was recorded by Thornhill in 1946, and here is one of the few times it has been played since.
The Ryan Truesdell Orchestra’s 2012 performance features singer Wendy Gilles, pianist Frank Kimbrough, and tenor saxophonist Donny McCaslin.
