Sandoval was born November 6, 1949, in Artemisa, Cuba, a little town outside of Havana.
He started training in classical trumpet at the age of 12 and at 15 was admitted to the Cuban National School of the Arts, where he learned his technical chops from a Russian classical trumpeter.
Soon he was swept away by the artistry of musicians like Charlie Parker, Clifford Brown, and Dizzy Gillespie.
He met his mentor, colleague, and long-time friend, Dizzy Gillespie, for the first time in 1977 when Gillespie was on one of his many trips to Cuba. He’s now a US citizen.
