A major force on the tenor-sax ever since he won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition in 1991, Joshua Redman has continued to improve with age without seriously altering his modern straight-ahead style.
In 2016, he teamed up with pianist Kevin Hays, bassist Joe Sanders, and drummer Jorge Rossy at the Vitoria Jazz Festival, performing Oscar Pettiford’s medium-tempo “Blues In The Closet.”
Redman begins with some unaccompanied tenor, plays the melody, features an excellent piano solo by Hays and a spot for bassist Sanders, and then constructs a colorful solo of his own.
