“Take The Coltrane,” a blues with a simple and catchy melody, was written by Duke Ellington for the quartet date that he recorded with John Coltrane in 1962.
In 2017, a quintet comprised of Branford Marsalis (on soprano), tenor-saxophonist Tim Warfield, pianist Orrin Evans, bassist Mike Boone, and drummer Justin Faulkner performed the medium-tempo number with passion and intensity.
The drummer largely steals the show, really exciting the audience during Marsalis’ solo and having an explosive improvisation of his own.
