In 2010, as part of Wynton Marsalis’ “Vitoria Suite,” the Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra recorded “Mendizorrotza Swing” which is a relative of Dizzy Gillespie’s “Things To Come.”
In this performance from 2021, the big band takes the piece at a fast tempo, plays the tricky ensemble parts flawlessly, and sets the stage for an absolutely blazing Wynton Marsalis trumpet solo.
The other soloists are tenor-saxophonist Victor Goines, pianist Dan Nimmer, trombonist Chris Crenshaw, and bassist Carlos Henriquez.
There is something to be said for full-time big bands!
