The Jazz Crusaders were formed in Memphis in the late 1950s and originally consisted of pianist Joe Sample, tenor-saxophonist Wilton Felder, trombonist Wayne Henderson, drummer Stix Hooper and a variety of bassists.
After moving to Los Angeles in 1960, they signed with the Pacific Jazz label and became popular, featuring soul jazz, hard bop, and a trademark tenor-trombone frontline.
By 1971 they had dropped the “Jazz” from their name and were a bit more open to r&b, often adding a guitarist including most notably Larry Carlton.
Henderson left the group in 1975, Hooper departed in 1983 and the Crusaders disbanded a few years later although there were partial reunions through the years
The 2003 version of the band had Sample and Felder joined by trombonist Stephan Baxter, guitarist Ray Parker Jr, bassist Freddie Washington, and drummer Kendrick Scott.
They perform one of their more popular songs from the 1970s, “Put It Where You Want It,” which has some lively solos over a catchy rhythm.
