Flugelhornist Clark Terry first got the idea for his “Mumbles” character when he heard some old blues records and could not understand what the singer was trying to say.
Staring with a 1964 recording with the Oscar Peterson Trio, Terry usually included a purposely unintelligible “Mumbles” feature in his performances.
This 2006 version is a good example of Terry singing with his typical humor while almost making sense in spots.
