Whether playing hard bop or fusion with her husband Carlos Santana, Cindy Blackman has long been one of the most powerful drummers in jazz and modern music.
On this performance of a rapid piece with a quartet that includes tenor-saxophonist Antoine Roney, Ms. Blackman does not let up for a moment.
The focus is on the drummer throughout, even during the brief tenor and electric piano solos, as Blackman drives the band and takes a dazzling solo of her own.
