A Tribute to Eddie Durham

Topsy Durham

The guitarist-trombonist’s daughter is interviewed about her innovative father

Eddie Durham (1906-87) had many musical accomplishments as an arranger-composer (he composed “Topsy” and “I Don’t Want To Set The World On Fire” and is said to have co-composed “One O’Clock Jump”), a distinctive swing trombonist, and one of the very first electric guitarists.

Durham was active until the end of his life but has been a bit underrated in jazz history, possibly because his innovations were in so many different areas.

In a wide-ranging interview, his daughter Topsy Durham talks about Eddie Durham’s life, career and his accomplishments, giving listeners a great deal of information about her talented and unique father.
