Drummer Idris Muhammad was born on November 13, 1939 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Muhammad, born Leo Morris, began his career at the young age of 16 in various soul and R&B bands.

He was an incredibly prolific drummer during the ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s, recording as a leader and a sideman for Lou Donaldson, Pharaoh Sanders, and more.

He’s been the backbone of many bands including ones led by Lou Donaldson, Johnny Griffin, Pharoah Sanders and Grover Washington, Jr.

Britt Alexander wrote “Inside The Music, The Life of Idris Muhammad” about this master of the drums.

Muhammad and Ahmad Jamal have been touring together since 1995.

A master pianist needs a master drummer and Jamal got one…and a master bass player too.

Recorded in Vienna 2001
