Ever since the mid-1960s, Hubert Laws has been considered one of the world’s greatest flute players.
He has appeared in a wide variety of settings since then, sometimes blending jazz with classical music or playing crossover music.
But when it comes to straight ahead jazz, very few flute players are on his level.
On an uptempo version of Sonny Rollins’ “Airegin” with pianist David Budway, bassist John Leftwich, and drummer Ralph Penland, Laws plays one of the hottest piccolo solos ever recorded and filmed.
In addition, Budway is in top form during his rapid statement and Penland has a short and colorful solo.
