The great tenor in 1973

One of Sonny Rollins’ greatest strengths has been his ability to take long solos that never run out of ideas while always keep the melody close by.

This valuable film clip, the first half of a performance of Rollins’ “Alfie’s Theme,” features his 1973 band, the same group that recorded Horn Culture.

Rollins takes a four-minute solo that is both energetic and relaxed, creative yet logical.

Also featured are guitarist Yoshiaki Masuo and pianist Walter Davis Jr.

Personnel:

Sonny Rollins, tenor
Walter Davis Jr, piano
Yoshiaki Masuo, guitar
Bob Cranshaw, electric bass
David Lee, drums
