The loss of Chick Corea, who passed away in 2021, will always be felt just as was true of other irreplaceable jazz greats (Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, etc.).
A distinctive pianist and keyboardist who was also a skilled composer, Corea’s greatest gifts to the music might very well have been his youthful enthusiasm and musical curiosity which led him to leading a nearly countless number of inventive ensembles.
In 2014, he performed with a short-lived trio that also featured bassist Esperanza Spalding and drummer Jeff Ballard.
While Corea and Ballard played together fairly regularly during 1999-2001, the pianist never recorded with Spalding, making this film clip rather unique.
The communication between the three masterful musicians makes their trio sound like a regularly working group.
