While one does not necessarily think of the Dominican Republic as being a hotbed of jazz, Josean Jacobo with his group Tumbao is changing one’s perception.

Having just recorded the album Cimarron, on Nov. 30, 2019 Jacobo and his group Tumbao performed at Sajoma in the Dominican Republic.

The group, which also includes bassist Daroll Méndéz, drummer Otoniel Nicolás, Mols Sila on Dominican percussion, tenor-saxophonist Ronald Féliz, and altoist Nicolás Mondragón, seeks to combine Jacobo’s heritage in the music of the Dominican Republic with modern jazz.

The spirited piece that they perform displays plenty of energy, builds to a strong climax, has prominent percussion, and includes a fine solo from the leader.
