In 1988 at the Mt. Fuji Jazz Festival in Japan, a rather remarkable group was gathered together.
Performing the Charlie Parker blues “Au Privave” at a blazing tempo were the 18-year old trumpeter Roy Hargrove, trombonist Robin Eubanks (whose smooth solo sounds effortless), altoist Bobby Watson who peppers his statement with a few song quotes, the great veteran tenor Johnny Griffin, and the relatively young pianist Renee Rosnes with swinging accompaniment by bassist Marlene Rosenberg and drummer Cindy Blackman.
The solos each display personality and creative ideas and the closing tradeoff by the four horns is full of colorful moments, particularly when Hargrove’s high-note outburst is echoed by Griffin.
Thanks are due to Bret Primack (“the video guy”) for posting this gem.
