Guitarist John Scofield and bassist Steve Swallow are old musical friends, playing compatible post-bop jazz with their own individual voices.
They first recorded together in 1979 on drummer Bill Goodwin’s Solar Energy, they both appeared on recordings by Gary Burton’s and Paul Bley, Swallow played bass on eight of Scofield’s albums, and the guitarist is on one of Swallow’s records; Scofield even named one of his trio albums Swallow Tales.
At the time of this relaxed duet on the original ballad “Away,” Scofield was 72 and Swallow was 83.
They show that masters of any age can play creative modern jazz.
