Ralph Peterson (1962-2021) played second drums with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, performed with many of the top young jazz greats of the 1980s and ‘90s, and was quite prominent in the years before his death from cancer including leading a Jazz Messengers tribute band.
On Aug. 26, 1989, he appeared at the Mt. Fuji Jazz Festival with an impressive quintet comprised of trumpeter Terence Blanchard, altoist Steve Wilson, pianist Geri Allen, and bassist Phil Bowler.
The quintet performs an appealing bop original and takes concise improvisations with Peterson creating an impressive solo that climaxes the piece.
