George Benson gained so much fame in the 1970s with “This Masquerade” and other vocal numbers that since then his guitar playing tends to be a bit underrated.
At a jazz festival in 1988, he shows that, if anything, he grew as a jazz guitarist through the years.
On the medium-tempo Charlie Parker blues “Billie’s Bounce,” flugelhornist Clark Terry takes a typically joyful solo and tenor-saxophonist James Moody picks up steam as he progresses throughout his spot.
Benson holds his own with the others, is followed by pianist David Garfield, and there is also a tradeoff with drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts as electric bassist Stanley Banks keeps the music swinging.
It adds up to a fun jam session featuring several all-time greats.
