Joe Zawinul’s “Birdland” was a hit for Weather Report and lived on for decades in the repertoire of Manhattan Transfer.

Maynard Ferguson also did well with the song, creating the most popular big band version.

His big band, which includes Peter Erskine (Weather Report’s former drummer), performs an enthusiastic version of the song with trumpeter Ferguson getting in a few typical upper register blasts.
