Guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel has had a wide ranging career, developing a very original sound and mostly performing his own compositions.
However as with many modern jazz musicians today, bebop is the foundation of his music.
Appearing on pianist Emmet Cohen’s weekly podcast Emmet’s Place, Rosenwinkel explores George Wallington’s “Boplicity,” a song that became known due to its recording by Miles Davis’ Birth of the Cool Nonet in the late 1940s.
Rosenwinkel and Cohen are joined by bassist Alexander Claffy and drummer Kyle Poole during an inventive medium-tempo exploration of the somewhat obscure straight ahead tune.
