The 1981 festival held by Karl Berger to celebrate the tenth anniversary of his Creative Music Studio resulted in some unusual and exciting musical moments.

This excerpt from a version of Ornette Coleman’s “Broadway Blues” contains a dazzling and largely free form solo from guitarist Pat Metheny who interacts with bassist Miroslav Vitous and drummer Jack DeJohnette, with tenor-saxophonist Dewey Redman joining in on the brief closing melody statement.

It gives one a hint of the musical fireworks that took place that day.
