The song title of “But Beautiful” can be used to describe the tone of tenor-saxophonist Stan Getz (1927-91).
Getz had as beautiful a tone on tenor as Johnny Hodges on alto and, while his style may have originally been based in Lester Young and cool jazz, he evolved and developed through the years.
Still, there were few things in music more beautiful than hearing Getz caress a ballad.
This 1989 version of “But Beautiful” has the tenor joined by Kenny Barron (one of his favorite pianists), bassist Yasuhito Mori, and drummer Ben Riley.
