Donald Brown, an excellent pianist, was a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers during 1981-82.

During most of the years since, he has been an educator, teaching at the University of Tennessee starting in 1988.

Due to not being part of the major league jazz scene as a player, Brown tends to be overlooked, but he has continued recording regularly for his Space-Time label, and occasionally leading the Space-Time All-Stars.

In this clip from Jazz á Vienne 2008, Brown performs his own “Carter Country” with a group featuring solos from trumpeter Bill Mobley, Jean Toussaint on soprano, vibraphonist Steve Nelson and bassist Essiet Essiet in addition to the pianist.

Personnel:

Donald Brown, piano
Bill Mobley, trumpet
Jean Toussaint, soprano
Steve Nelson, vibes
Essiet Essiet, bass
Billy Kilson, drums
