The recent passing of Jack DeJohnette on Oct. 26, 2025 at the age of 83 leaves a major gap in the jazz and music worlds.
Whether playing with Jackie McLean, the Charles Lloyd Quartet, Miles Davis, the Keith Jarrett Trio, or countless others as a stimulating and inventive drummer, or leading Directions, New Directions, Special Edition or any of his later groups (often doubling on piano which was his first instrument), DeJohnette was always a major asset.
To celebrate his legacy, here are three film clips of Jack DeJohnette in a variety of settings.
In 1969, Miles Davis led a quintet that also included tenor-saxophonist Wayne Shorter, keyboardist Chick Corea, bassist Dave Holland and DeJohnette that never made a studio recording.
