Pianist Chick Corea and vibraphonist Gary Burton first recorded together on one song in 1972 for a Hubert Laws album.
Later that year they recorded their first duo album, Crystal Silence, and there would be at least six other duet recordings during the next 40 years; there were also other projects including some that found them joined by strings or a symphony orchestra.
From 2011, they dig into Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “No More Blues,” a tune that Burton had recorded unaccompanied more than 40 years before.
Burton and Corea come up with strong individual statements and creative interplay.
They reharmonize the song and make it sound a bit different than the other versions.
It is always a joy to hear two masters performing with obvious mutual affection while pushing each other.
