The always-brilliant tenor-saxophonist Joshua Redman joins the Emmet Cohen Trio (with bassist Philip Norris and drummer Kyle Poole) for a swinging rendition of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Chega de Saudade” (which in English is “No More Blues”).
The song, which alternates its choruses between minor and major keys, has always resulted in stimulating performances and that is certainly true of this version.
Redman takes a melodic and mellow solo (contrasting with his heated upper-register playing during the closing vamp) while Cohen’s improvisation is a bit playful and lively.
Jobim would have been pleased.
