They never recorded together but altoist Paquito D’Rivera and pianist Tete Montoliu prove to be a perfect team on “Como Fue.”
D’Rivera, who was 40 at the time of this 1988 concert appearance, has been a brilliant altoist and clarinetist ever since his early days in Cuba.
Montoliu (1933-97) spent most of his career based in his native Spain and performing in Europe where he was rightly considered a true musical master.
With the support of bassist David Finck, drummer Akira Tana, and percussionist Sammy Figueroa, Montoliu takes solo honors during a relaxed performance that also includes an impressive D’Rivera cadenza.
