The jazz scene is so overflowing with talented musicians that it can be difficult to keep up with all of the music.
Altoist Max Bessesen, who released his debut album in 2020 (Trouble), grew up in Denver, studied music in several countries, was based in Chicago during 2017-21, and finally moved to New York.
On a version of George Shearing’s “Conception” (the melody does not appear in this performance until the end), Bessesen takes a swinging and inventive solo, trumpeter Ron Miles (it is a pleasure to hear him in this setting) makes a lyrical statement, and pianist Eric Krouse has a particularly creative improvisation while fine support is provided by bassist Ethan Philion and drummer Nathan Friedman.
